Obituary

Alfred Louis Stone, age 99, of Clermont, FL, passed away on February 24, 2024, just 3 months shy of his 100th birthday.

Alfred was born to Philip and Lillian Stone in Taunton MA on May 30, 1924. He served with honor in the Pacific Theater during WWII as a gunner and pilot. After the war, Alfred moved to Winthrop, MA where he met and married Gloria Jacobs on May 8, 1948.

Alfred and Gloria bought their first home in Burlington, MA in 1958, where they raised their two children Alan and Cindy.

He worked at MIT and Nuclide Corporation as an electronic technician, then moved on to Boston University as an Administrator/Assistant to the Chairman of the Physics Department where he stayed for almost 40 years before retiring.

He was a pilot, avid gardener, golfer, artist/painter, and baker of pies. He loved boating and fishing. He will be universally remembered for his pranks and teasing, particularly (but not limited to) his own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Cindy took painting classes together and showed pigeons in the local 4H shows and enjoyed raising animals. He and Alan played lots of golf, went to air shows, and enjoyed deep science discussions.

He loved spending time in his homes in New Hampshire and Florida. After decades being snowbirds between Massachusetts and Florida, he and Gloria moved to Florida during the Covid pandemic, where he spent most afternoons sitting on the lanai watching (and commenting on) the golfers passing by.

Alfred is survived by his wife of 76 years Gloria, his son Alan (and Alan's spouse Maureen), his daughter Cindy (and former spouse Carl McDavitt), and all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Alex, Andie Lynn, Angela, Marnie, Calem and Olivia.

Nearly everyone who knew him enjoyed his unique character, great love of life, and joyful, disarming sense of humor. He touched so many lives and he will be missed incredibly by all of those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Alfred's favorite charities (Winchester (Massachusetts) Hospital and/or St. Jude's) would be greatly appreciated.

A remembrance of Alfred is being planned. A date and location will be announced shortly.
