Alan Murray
Adamson
February 27, 1935 – April 23, 2026
Alan Murray Adamson, 91, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026.
Alan was born on February 27, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, to Hilda and Peter Adamson, who had emigrated from Dundee, Scotland. He grew up with a deep appreciation for his Scottish roots, proudly tracing his heritage to the Macintosh and Gordon clans.
Alan earned a degree in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. With multiple career paths ahead of him, he accepted a position with the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO), a decision that would shape both his professional and personal life. One day in the lunchroom, he noticed a red‑headed colleague, Carol Ann Smith. The two soon married and made their home in Hauppauge, New York, where they began raising their family.
Alan and Carol were the proud parents of three children: Alan (Ann), Elizabeth, and Amy (Dennis). When Alan accepted a new position with the New York Power Pool, the family relocated upstate to Guilderland, New York, a place they would long consider home.
A devoted father, Alan delighted in family life. He took his children camping and canoeing, tended his garden with great care (and maintained what many would call a perfectly monoculture grass lawn), and planned family vacations with extraordinary detail and precision. These trips included visits to historic battlefields, Disney World, and Colonial Williamsburg—places that reflected both his love of history and his joy in sharing experiences with those he loved. Later in life, he discovered cruising, which quickly became a favorite way to travel.
Alan was deeply proud of his Scottish heritage and was an active member of the St. Andrew’s Society, where he served as President—a role he cherished. He was especially proud to become “Grandad” to four grandchildren: Alec, Aaron, Sebastien, and Haley.
After Carol’s passing in 2010, Alan embraced a new chapter as a snowbird, dividing his time between Guilderland, New York, and Clermont, Florida. He enjoyed discovering all that Florida had to offer, particularly the chance to spend more time at Disney—where his favorite character, fittingly, was Donald Duck.
Alan also enjoyed spending time with his younger sister, Sheila, and her husband, Jim (McKenna), who also spent time in Clermont. Fond memories of Sheila included spending time at her at Jim's house on Lake Champlain, visiting London and Scotland with them, and Sheila's visits to Clermont after she had moved up north.
Back in Guilderland, Alan became active in the singles group at his church and connected with Jackie Vitale, whom he had known for years through their work at the New York Power Pool. They married in 2018 and made their full‑time home in Clermont. Together, they shared a love of travel, cruising, playing bridge, and attending the theater.
Alan’s passion for travel planning never faded. One of his final joys was a cruise in March 2026 along the Mississippi River, where he visited his final battlefield, Vicksburg—a trip that brought him immense satisfaction.
Alan will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, generous spirit, thoughtful planning, and sly wit.
In honor of Alan, contributions may be made to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (https://www.colonialwilliamsburg.org/), a cause he supported faithfully every year.
